Northern Michigan Spiced Wine with Tart Cherries and Holiday Spices

Inspired by the most beautiful of winter wonderlands from sea to shining sea, this northern Michigan mulled red wine is infused with Traverse Bay tart cherries, a few splashes of well-aged brandy, and a blend of fragrant seasonal spices. Each glass is garnished with sticks of cinnamon and clementine twist, then served warm next to the fireplace. Merry Christmas!

  • 2 bottles Cabernet or Malbec
  • 1 cup tart cherry juice
  • 1/3 cup brandy
  • 4 tablespoons cane sugar
  • 4-5 star anise pods
  • 4-5 cardamom pods crushed
  • 6-8 whole cloves
  • 6-8 allspice berries
  • 2-3 cinnamon sticks plus additional for garnish
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Zest of 2 clementines plus the peel reserved for twisted garnish


  • Pour all ingredients into a sauce pot and place over the stove top on low-medium heat. Simmer until the sugar is entirely dissolved, then turn down the heat to low, cover the pot and cook for an additional 15-20 minutes. Remove from heat and rest for 5 minutes. Strain through a fine-mesh sieve and discard the mulling spices. Serve immediately, garnished with cinnamon sticks and clementine twist. Cheers!
