How to Craft the Perfect Smoky Bourbon Cuba Libre Cocktail

Experience LFR's signature smoked bourbon Cuba Libre cocktail, featuring the most incredible blend of sweet, smoky, and tangy flavors.

Overview

A smoky Bourbon Cuba Libre stands out as one of my all-time favorite outdoor twists on a cocktail classic, offering a unique blend of flavors that never fails to impress. Let’s delve into the components that make this drink truly special.

The choice of bourbon is crucial, and a rye bourbon works wonders due to its bold and spicy character. In this recipe we’re using Breckenridge Distilling’s Bourbon Whiskey. When smoking the bourbon, select wood chips that accentuate its inherent flavors. Oak or cherry wood chips are excellent options, but if you’re feeling adventurous, opt for hickory or mesquite to amplify the smokiness.

To smoke the bourbon, load the wood chips into a smoker or smoke gun and let them infuse their essence. A handheld smoker can also be employed if a larger one is unavailable. Once smoked, pour the bourbon over ice in a glass. The coke selection may seem trivial, but the right choice can elevate the entire cocktail. I recommend Mexican coke, made with real cane sugar rather than high fructose corn syrup. The resulting richer, more nuanced flavor harmonizes beautifully with the smoky bourbon.

To assemble the drink, add a splash of fresh lime juice to the smoked bourbon and ice, then top with Mexican coke. Stir briefly, garnish with a lime wedge, and behold your delectable creation—a smoked rye bourbon and coke that’s bound to captivate.

This cocktail is best enjoyed around a campfire with friends, providing the perfect end to a day spent hiking, fishing, or hunting. For larger gatherings, consider preparing a pitcher of smoked rye bourbon and coke to share. So, gather your wood chips, fire up the smoker, and immerse yourself in the delightful experience of crafting a Bourbon Cuba Libre. Cheers!

HISTORY OF WHISKEY AND COKE:

The history of this cocktail back to the late 1800s when whiskey was the spirit of choice for most Americans. The first recorded use of Coca-Cola in a mixed drink was in the early 1900s, with the exact origin of the pairing still up for debate. It was during this time that Coca-Cola became widely available, and bartenders began experimenting with mixing it with different types of alcohol. The addition of whiskey was a natural choice, as it complemented the sweet and slightly acidic flavor of the soda. Over time, variations of the drink emerged, with some bartenders adding additional ingredients such as bitters or lemon juice. Today, the whiskey and coke remains a popular cocktail, with variations incorporating different types of whiskey, such as rye or bourbon. Its enduring popularity can be attributed to its simple yet satisfying combination of sweet, spicy, and smoky flavors.

ART AND SCIENCE TO THE PERFECT SMOKED BOURBON CUBA LIBRE?

Mixology is both an art and a science. Crafting the perfect cocktail requires a creative spirit, a keen eye, and a steady hand. The art of mixology entails using all of our senses to create a balanced and visually appealing drink, selecting the perfect glassware, garnish, and ice. It involves paying attention to the nuances of flavor, aroma, and texture, and using them to craft a unique and unforgettable drinking experience. Our own personal flair and creativity infuse the cocktail with its final touch. Let’s raise our glasses to the art of mixology!

On the other hand, crafting the perfect cocktail is also a science. Achieving the perfect balance of flavors requires knowledge of the chemical reactions between ingredients and the interactions of our taste buds. The right ratios of sugar, rye, and lime create the ideal balance of sweet, sour, and smoky flavors. While we’re happy to share our favorite recipe, we also encourage experimentation to create your own. So, grab your lab coat, fire up the grill, and let’s start experimenting.
